The quick answer
- Buried utility lines require locating before grinding starts, and private-line locating can add to the job's scope.
- Stump width, wood condition, surface roots and the number of stumps affect the amount of grinding needed.
- Access through the yard, the agreed depth and hauling grindings determine additional equipment and cleanup work.

Stump Size, Access and the Finished Ground
Stump grinding prices depend on how much wood needs grinding, how the machine reaches it and the finish you want. Call about the stump and describe whether the space will become lawn, a planting bed or part of another project. Your technician uses that goal to define the work.
Look up at anything above the stump
Overhanging branches and nearby leaning trees matter even when the job is at ground level. From outside the area, mention any cracked or hanging limb when calling. Keep people, pets and vehicles clear of those trees, and take photographs only from a safe distance.
Grinding can also be discussed during a tree removal visit. Coordinating the tasks may reduce separate setup, but grinding and debris handling still need their own place in the scope.
Look down at width, wood and roots
Stump width and the number of stumps determine how much material needs processing. A broad base with flared roots involves more wood than the trunk's top alone suggests. Tell your technician about visible surface roots and whether the tree came down recently or years ago.
Hard or soft wood and the degree of decay affect grinding effort. Age alone doesn't establish the wood's condition. Your technician assesses the remaining material and separates work on the stump from work on roots extending across the lawn.
Grinding depth changes the scope too. Discuss the intended use of the ground during the call. Lawn restoration and a later construction project can require different finishes; the agreed depth and area should be recorded before work.
Look around for gates and buried lines
Gate width, turns and the route across the lot determine equipment access. Mention steps, narrow passages and other visible obstacles when calling. Machine access and the route for carrying debris both count toward the work.
Sunshine 811 provides a free service that notifies member utilities to locate their buried facilities before ground disturbance. Its homeowner FAQ assigns the locate request to the contractor doing the digging, so you can call about grinding now while that preparation is planned.
Sunshine 811 also explains that privately owned utilities require separate locating, at the property owner's or excavator's expense. Mention irrigation, outbuilding power or other known buried systems during the service discussion so locating is included in the plan.
Check the house side and choose the method
Nearby walls, paving and screen enclosures affect machine positioning and the working area. Call about a stump beside a driveway or foundation rather than assuming width alone describes the job.
Grinding breaks down wood within an agreed area and depth. Full stump removal excavates the stump and root mass, creating a different access, hauling and ground-restoration task. Stump removal cost therefore depends on the method as well as the size.
| Scope choice | Work involved | Finish to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Grind the stump | Process wood to an agreed depth | Remaining roots and grindings |
| Include surface roots | Extend work beyond the stump base | Exact area included |
| Excavate the stump | Lift out the stump and root mass | Excavated soil and backfill |
| Haul grindings | Load and remove loose material | Ground level and restoration |
Check the street side and debris route
The route to the loading area affects how much handling the grindings need. Call about whether the material should stay, be raked back or be hauled away. Backfill, topsoil and lawn repair need to be named separately when included.
For downed or sagging wires, follow FPL's guidance to assume wires are energized: stay well away and contact the electric utility serving the property or 911.
